Wings Over the Rockies is a non-profit organization dedicated to releasing people’s aspirations of flight through shows, events, and educational programs at two locations: Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum and Exploration of Flight. These two sites attract around 160,000 visitors from all 50 U.S. states and 34 countries each year!
In 1994, the United States Air Force transferred Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum to a group of volunteers. The museum is located in Hangar 1 on the former Lowry Air Force Base in eastern Denver, Colorado. It consists of 100,000 square feet of space displaying aircraft, space vehicles, artifacts, military uniforms, and more.
Excitement awaits those who are passionate about flight at Exploration of Flight, which is only a 30-minute drive from the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum. With 15 acres set on one of America’s busiest airports and plenty of aviation-focused events, programming, and exhibits, this is an immersive educational experience for all.
After Lowry Air Force Base closed in 1994, a dedicated group of volunteers banded together to form the Wings Over the Rockies museum. This amazing feat was accomplished by sourcing loaned aircraft from the US Air Force Museum. In 1997, their perseverance led to Colorado designating Wings Over the Rockies as its official air and space museum. The collection has since expanded to include spacecraft and civilian aircraft, proving that there truly is no limit to what this enterprising team can achieve. In 2011, the museum received a new entrance area, and the enormous Boeing B-52 was raised onto pedestals. The interactive experiences that Wings offers have been world-renowned, and they continue to improve. In addition to raising historical awareness, Wings is one of the best aviation and space museums in terms of enhancing customer experience.
In 2014, Wings Over the Rockies began construction on its second location, the Exploration of Flight campus at Centennial Airport. In July 2018, the Exploration of Flight opened, followed by the Colorado SKIES Academy in 2019. The Air & Space Museum and the Exploration of Flight campus now hum with life-sized flight simulators, amazing interactive experiences, and world-class historical exhibitions. Wings Over the Rockies is home to one of North America’s finest aviation and space museums as a result of this collaboration.
